I would thing 100 to 300 yd. should be ok with this scope. If anyone has this scope- let me know--

It sounds to me like the store is trying to sell you another scope, if it was indeed a salesman that told you that.
The general purpose all around scope for hunting is the 3-9x40. It works just fine at the Range too for target shooting out to 500 or 600 yards in my opinion. High powered scopes are the "rage" right now but I find too much magnification to be a detriment to accurate shooting. There must be a reason why 6x and 10x power scopes have been the prefered magnification of real life marksmen for years.
Rather than a bigger objective lens or higher magnification look in to better quality glass with better coatings. I have a set of 8x binoculars that easily out perform my 12x binoculars based on the quality of the glass alone. You can make up for poor quality glass by going to a higher magnification.
As for the objective lens size, the human eye can only make use of so much of a good thing, be it light, magnification, or any other variable you care to name. The biggest objective lens I own is 42mm. That's big enough for dim light shooting, half hour before sunrise to half hour after sunset. Lots of folks believe they need a big objective lens for accurate distance shooting but if one looks at some of the long distance shots made in the past one may very well find that the objective lens size wasn't all that big. The big objective lens is a recent fad.
Take a look at what Sgt. Carlos Hathcock used and you will probably find that he used high quality glass that didn't have the diameter of a pie plate on top of his rifle. Then get out and shoot with what you have. You just might surprise yourself and if nothing else, when you beat your buddies with their pie plate sized lenses, you can smirk at them all day long as you take their money.
