Default scope for 300 win. mag.

Just bought a savage 111 pre-accutrigger in .300 win. mag. from a guy that won it some years ago at a gun raffle. He never used it and decided to sell. I picked it up for $275. My question is what scope would you recommend I put on this rifle ? I don't want to break the bank, but I do need something that can take the rather generous recoil of this rifle.

This is what I have on mine. It's really a good bang for the buck.

It's a fixed power, you'll have to pay quite a bit more for a Super Sniper with variable power.

OK please answer the following.
1. What do you want to spend on it? (Not break the bank doesn't tell me much).
2. What are you shooting with it?
3. How far are you wanting to shoot it?

What Tango said. Give us more information on how it's going to be used. Having said that I have a Burris Fullfield 2 4.5x-14x-42mm on my 300 win mag.

Well, I thought I might use the rifle on a up coming Colorado elk hunt I am planning. As to the amount I am willing to spend, I would like to stay in the $200 to no more than $500 range. As to distance, I probably wouldn't take a shot at more than 400 yds or so. I don't like to "wing" anything . Thanks, Ron...

I have a Savage 110, pre accu-trigger in 7mm Rem Mag. Your rings and mounts are as importent as your glass. I also use mine for 400+- range. Warne bases and rings to start. I've had them on my rifle since day one, and changed the scope out once. Get steel rings and bases!!! For a scope I us a Weaver V10, 2-10x38mm. It has been great. Make sure you get bases for a flat receiver also. Savage only started using the round receiver w/ the advent of the accu-trigger in 2003.

This is what I use:
Warne 1" Maxima Permanent-Attachable Weaver-Style Rings Matte Low - MidwayUSA
Warne Maxima 2-Piece Steel Weaver-Style Scope Base Savage 10 Through 16, 110 Through 116 Flat Rear Matte - MidwayUSA
Weaver Classic V-Series Rifle Scope 2-10x 38mm Dual-X Reticle Matte - MidwayUSA

Mine is a Sierra light. I have thought about changing out the stock as it is sqaure like a 2x4, but this thing is so accurate as is I'm afraid to.

With a 250 yard zero using 180gr partitions @ 2900 fps (kinda standard store ammo), you will have to adjust your scope 3moa or 12 clicks on a 1/4 moa scope for 400 yards. Even at 350 yards, the bullet drop is not that severe to require a big adjustment w/ a 250 yard zero. 2 moa or 8 clicks.

How does everyone feel about burris signature zee rings ? I was planning on using them, Is warne a better choice ? JP your rifle looks the same as mine. I figured I would have to remove the rear sight to mount a scope but did you have to take the front sight off ? it looks to me you did. Not the worlds greatest stock on these rifles, but at least it's wood. I may have to do a little work on mine as it failed the dollar bill test. Thanks for the advice, I am looking at everything everyone suggests.

Mine never had iron sights. Before you inlet the stock, see how she shoots.

I concur with JP! Do not do anything to it regarding inletting=free floating or other stock work until you shoot it and attempt to find the right round for it to digest! I have been a fan of the free float for years. However obviously that is not the golden answer! My new Remington 700 CDL 7 mm Rem Mag has a contact point right at the front end of the stock as I understand they make them that way. It is 1/2 MOA shooter at 100 yards a darned if I am going to touch it! I am pleased!
As far as a good scope buy good rings and bases first. * Not the inexpensive aluminum either! It is a 300 Win Mag There are some good scopes out there but figure on the $300.00 or up range to have complete prolonged durability.
You can't shoot well on what you can not see well. And once again with the recoil the real inexpensive scopes may not hold up. And then you have just spent good money that could have been used on a quality scope. I have a Leupold Rings Bases and Scope on my Remington 7mm Rem Mag. for that reason.
Good luck and also do not rule out a good used scope. Most have had very few actual rounds fired through them. As well as most rifles guys buy! A lot of those purchases were on a whim! And then they want something else. Just a thought!!!!!

Thanks for all the input, I'll keep the horse before the cart and not do any inlet work until I scope the rifle and test fire. All the suggested scopes look so good, now I have another problem . I remember reading somewhere that a scope should cost at least as much if not more than the rifle it's used on, looks like this is finally going to happen for me ! By the way, this thing kicks like a mule on steroids. I have a Rem. Auto with a synthetic stock chambered in 30-06, I thought it was hard hitting until now. When I sight this rifle in I am going to take my good old time and not waste ammo for sure. Any recoil management tips you all would like to share ? Thanks again, Ron ...
