the stainless steel X7's? very nice indeed! my LGS has a XS7 in 243 that's stainless steel, that just keeps begging me to take it home and take up that missing spot for a 243 i have!

the adjustable trigger on the X7'sis great. two of mide are adjust down to under 3 lbs. ( the 7mm-08 and the 25-06) my XS7VH in 308 after doing a little polishing and adjusting is just under 2 lbs.. i am very pleased with the triggers on the X7's. very smooth and breaks clean.

Ok, I am looking into a .308 but I can't find any of the stainless steels online. Do they still make them?

as far as i know they do. shows to be made in the S/S, the regular blst stock and blued finish and the camo version with blued finish.

mine is the XS7VH which has the heavy 26" varmint barrel. here are some pictures of mine.

No it isn't sniper. That's one of three chamberimgs for the x7 varmint hunter. Marlin, as axxe said and as my avatar says, is imo the best rifle out there in your price range. If I didn't think so I wouldn't have ALL of the x7 line including FOUR no one else has yet

I had a Ruger M77 in 220 Swift, it was a awesome gun but I don't think you'll find one in your price range. The Savage Axis is getting awesome reviews and is in your price range as is the Marlin. The Savage holds 3+1 rounds and the Marlin is 4+1 round. Probably doesn't matter much in a hunting situation but in a SHTF situation that extra round might come in handy.
I'm going to probably go with a 25-06 ctg. when time comes, here's a short list from Bud's Gun Shop with prices.
