The Howa/Vangard is a great gun and every single one I've owned has been an outstanding shooter. That one I can personally recommend highly.

I don't have any experience with the Stevens but someone I know who wrote a review for a major publication sent a check for the gun when he was done testing and this gentleman knows firearms rather well.

So I guess it all comes down to which one you like better in the looks department.

Either 1 will serve you well. If forced to a choice between those 2, I'd choose the Vanguard. It's more bang for your buck at that price and you'll like it more since you like it's looks better.

the Vanguard is a whole lot prettier especially the sporter models. and a great guarantee of accuracy. not much more than a Stevens, I love the Stevens, bothof mine are tackdrivers but butt ugly. maybe one witha cammo stock might look better.

Ya, looks like weatherby vanguard will be the way to go, at only 399$ and with a very impressive reputation and a quite pleasing appearance, i cant find a downside.

Amazon.com: Leupold Riflescope Vx-I 3-9X40Mm Duplex Gloss 53801: Sports & Outdoors

or

Amazon.com: Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40 Riflescope (Matte, BDC): Sports & Outdoors

. . or a better recommendation in the 150-250$ ish range for a proper optic for that vanguard .308?

i like them both (yes i have both ) . the howa is a nicer looking rifle but does not group any better . my howa is a wood stock model and the blueing is very nice ,so it looks pretty . like the others has stated spend the extra money on your glass .
