Recovering game shot at longer distances is very difficult.
Practice with a 22 or even a quality pellet rifle applies to shooting bore rifles. If you can hold a 22 steady enough to hit a bottle cap at 40 yards, you can make some long shots with the axis.
longest confirmed sniper shots have been done with the 50BMG cartridge in various rifles.
longest confirmed shot with the 308 was by an American Army sniper @ 1367 yrds in 2005 in the Iraqi war.
longest confirmed shot with the 338LM was by an UK sniper @2707 yrds in 2009 in the Afghanistan war.
longest confirmed shot with the 50BMG was by an Australian sniper @ 3079 yrds in 2012 in the Afghanistan war.
Carlos Hathcock set the standard with the 50BMG @ 2500 yrds in 1967 in the Vietnam war. that record stood until 2002 when a Canadian sniper set the new record at 2526 yrds in the Afghanistan war.
