Default Savage 170 worth picking up?

Recently came across a clean one in .30-30 for $250. I've read of feeding issues with some but I like the .30-30 pump concept and, to me, they have hunting rifle written all over them - are they good timber guns or better left on the used rack?

I worked with a guy from Minnesota who swore by this gun.
