It is my understanding that fully zipped cases trap the moisture, as does the foam in those foam-lined cases. It would be better off in a cabinet. When using the old surplus ammo, it would be a good idea to clean that day and coat it with some pre-storage oil, even if it is just a hose-down with Remoil. It will wipe off easy enough when you are ready to go hunting/plinking/avalanche-freeing.
We don't get snow here much, but i doubt it helped.
I have heard that bear grease is an excellent rust preventative.
