Ruger Deerstalker .44mag

Okay, so I saw on another post that someone mentioned not to shoot lead bullets out of the old Ruger Deerstalker .44mag carbine. Anyone know why and I am not sure I understand what they mean by lead bullet, I thought must ammo was made from lead?

New to me...my guess would be solid lead bullets would clog up the gas port that cycle the action.

I use semi jacketed soft nose hp's in my deerstalker...the original, not the newer model with the removable magazine. I was using Hornaday 240 gr JHP's...but they took to hitting low and right on the first shot. The semi jacketed soft points hit where they were supossed to every time.

Its bc the cast lead bullets clog the gas ports. By lead they mean bullets made from pure lead made out of wheel weights or some such.

FMJ, what type of ammo are you using with your deerstalker? Did you stick with Hornaday?

I am just using a bulk soft nose, semi jacketed hollow point, sitting on 22 gr imr 4227 for hunting. I have used the hornadys in the past with good results....its just previous to this season, for whatever reason(s), they decided to hit low on the first shot.

Hard cast bullets with gas checks will work just fine in the Ruger .44 Mag. And no WWs are not soft lead they are about the hardness of Lyman Alloy #2 good for pressures needed to push a 240 gr. .44 bullet up to 1,500 FPS.
