Ruger American?

Anybody own a ruger American? I am thinking about getting one as my first deer rifle. I am interested in any stories good or bad. I am thinking about 308 for caliber so I could use it for something a little bigger if I wanted. Thoughts?

I've got one in .270. Shoots well. Only complaint is the stock is flimsy but what do you expect.

My bolt randomly falls out. I've just not got around to having it fixed

Friend shot mine, liked it enough he ran out and bought one in 30-06.

Retaining pin. You have to work it a certain way. My friends 06 doesn't do it.

You might also want to consider the Marlin 7X series. Great rifle for a great price; about what the Ruger American costs.

The Ruger seems to be a fine accurate rifle for a fair price from the reports I have read, but I cannot vouch for them myself. I can however tell you that the Marlin is a darn fine shooter for what it costs just like the Savages. My two el-cheapo Savages shoot 1/2" or better using my handloads with no modifications still using their crappy flexo-stock.

Are those the Axis savages?

No I have a 11 270 WSM and a 111 30-06 both with the Accutrigger but no Accustock. Both fine shooters.

My buddy has a savage axis in .308, he get 1/2" group at 100 yards with Hornady ammo, I personally have a savage axis in 30-06 and I get 3/4" group at 100 yards, there are only about $300, I have heard some great thing about the ruger American rifle, it's accurate, fat and reliable, it's a little more expensive then the savage but both our great guns
