This is my first post so id like to start off by saying Hi, I'm am avid shooter and I have been for the past 10 years of my life (I'm only 20). I grew up shooting shotguns but I'm starting to get into long range shooting. Anyway back to my question, does anyone have any experience with the ruger American? I'm looking into getting this in .22-250 for varmint and predator hunting mostly. Are there any guns that you would suggest in the same price range (350-500). And what is a good scope for around 150-200 bucks. Thanks in advanced guys.

Take a look at the Marlin XL series. Not sure if they make one in .22-250. If not, the Ruger should be ok. As for scopes, I mostly use vintage scopes in fixed powers, so I can't help you there, but you should be able to get a fairly good new scope for $200.

Cottontop, another question for you, I've been looking into fix power scopes and I like some of them, if I was going to get one to shoot say between 100yds and 400yds what power would you suggest? And also what are the advantages to a fixed power scope? Thanks again

I respectfully disagree with cotton top.

You won't get a decent long range scope much under $450-$500.

I, too like fixed power in many applications. A 6X42 is a good power for the .22-250 and similar calibers.

A 6x, 8x, or 10x scope will work fine between 100 and 400 yards. I like the fixed powers because they are simpler with fewer parts to possibly break. In use, you don't have to make a decision or be fumbling around changing powers while trying to focus on your target. They are also lighter in weight. I know, some will disagree with me and say that new variable powers never break and some are very light. I guess they are probably right, but I just prefer to use a scope older than most of the folks on this forum. I like the older rifles too. I guess because I too am old and I like things the way they were.

After doing a full day of research in different rifles chambered in .22-250, my findings have brought a new aspect into play. I found I rather like the savage 11 trophy hunter XP, this comes with a 3-9x40 Nikon. I'm really having a hard time deciding between the two rifles. I am somewhat leaning towards the savage for the aspect of the after market parts and improvements on it. What do ya'll think?

Find the new guns magazine, they did a big article on the American in 30-06 and liked it. They criticize when they don't like something. The stock has two v-blocks molded into the stock to nest the receiver. This aids in consistency during temperature changes. I believe they said they were ringing the gong at 1000 yards about half of the shots.

If we are thinking of the same article, then that's the one that got me interested in the American.

Redfield and Nikon make decent scopes in the $200-$300 price range.
