I'm thinking about getting it or a browning abolt hunter ii (wood stock) the only reason to not get the browning is it is a bit high price at 650 compared to a 400 dollar ruger american even though it is an entry level rifle. I'm wondering which is the best bang for the buck. This will be my first high caliber deer rifle in 30-06.

My reply to any purchase like this is why by the cheap one. You will just end up selling it at a loss. Work a few more hours and buy the item you want and you wont have to trade off your entry level gun in the future.

The Ruger is a good working rifle. If you like the beautiful finish on the Browning then pay the extra. The Ruger 77 is a good some what plain hunt'in rifle. I have a few that are over 40 years old and have served well. My Sakos are great rifles but they live in the safe. The Ruger is a Poor Boy and has to work for a livin. good luck.
