There are SHOOTERS that are distance challenged with the .223. The round does fine, specially with the heavier weight match loads.

I've just gone through the same process in either a howa 1500 or a ruger hawkeye. The hawkeye won out as IMO it felt as it was balanced better, slightly lighter, shorter barrel.

I have always considered the Ruger 77 to be a rugged, well designed rifle. Stock design is pretty good the rifles fit most people well.
The Howa is a simple functional design and is a reasonably priced rifle. The action is similar in many respects to the Sako L61 but without the integral scope mount dovetails. I think the Howa trigger is better. I like the Ruger extractor better. I like the angled front guardscrew on the Ruger and the bolt stop. The Ruger scope mounting system is very rugged.
Both rifles have good service records. That is to say, there are no serious design-related problems. In the end, I would lean toward the Ruger unless the Howa felt better to me. I have built rifles based on both actions and found nothing to hate about either. GD

OK My favorite Ca Squirrel rifle is a 25-06 It is fast flat and down right makes a mess of any varmint within 500 yards of it.

Never mine the Dork in the picture. Look stop laughing ok it was the 90's Bright colors were the thing then.... The rifle is a M 98 with a Douglas barrel and a B&L OR Old Leupold scope. If you get 5 shots that are not touching then you suck at shooting. It was also my grandfathers favorite varmint rifle.

I have always liked the looks of the Ruger 77. My brother got one last year in 204 Ruger to use on coyotes. It is the cheaper model I forget what it's called.
The little rifle shoots like a house afire. Under 1" 5 shot groups at 100 yds with one factory load I can not for the life of me remember which. We were shooting lots of different types. He knows so that's all that matters. The only thing is the trigger is absolutely horrendous. Is this nonadjustable excuse for a trigger common to all new 77s or just the cheaper ones?

You can't see the pink dog with a lime green bandanna the hat was chartreuse, my shoes were white black and pink and you had to have the tongues pushed forward so that your pant legs went behind them.....
