I have shot three with a S&W mdl 29 my father owns. It is right handy at 25 yds.

One of my friends deer hunts with a Marlin 1894 .44 Magnum and has taken lots of deer.
My grandpa kept a Ruger .44 carbine in the camper as a backup to his Winchester 94 .30-30, I don't think he ever ended up killing a deer with it though. We did have a pack of wild dogs around at one point though and he killed 3 of the for of them with it. One at about 80 yards with a Remington soft point, it dropped like a rock.

I have shot one deer with a 357 mag pistol. The deer was less than 10 yards from me when I shot it. The deer dropped like a rock. The shot was so easy and perfect I could have easily killed it with a 22 LR.

I finished a deer with my SP-101 but it was basically point blank.

I've killed one deer with a .44 mag rifle, 65 yards, Norma 236 JHP factoyr load. Broke onside shoulder/neck and was down and dead right there (well it did a backfip and had all 4 legs pointing up).

Shot one deer with my dad's old Colt Python, Hornady Leverevolution 140 gr factory load. 52 yards facing straight away (so I spined him).

Took several with .44 mag handguns, Ruger Old and New Models, 3 different Smith 629's (4, 6 and 8 3/8") and a Ruger Super Redhawk 9.5".

Shots with .44 handguns have been from 17 ft to 150 yards. Most of them under 75 yards. And the majority were slammed with 180 0r 200 gr bullets handloaded to max.

The .44 magnum works, but it's not magic. Cracks me up, how all the web is full of drop 'em in their tracks all the time or every time. I've done a few, but they had blown shoulders and or spines. And I've blown shoulders with bigger stuff up close and had bone chunks on the opp side ground, and deer go 100 yards or so (slug guns).

Ya just never know what a deer will do, even with a decent hole through 'em.

If you have faith in, practice with, and shoot them well - your .357 , .44, .243/6mm will take deer and do a good job for you.
I really like the comment on, "who knows what the deer will do." A heart shoot deer if moving will leave one heck of a trail many feet wide for a surprising distance. The best way to drop one on site is to break bone. If dropping one on the spot is a must do (it is moving to where you cannot go), break the front shoulders.

Couldn't agree more on the shoulder shots.

FWIW I have heart shot a few deer......had some do the "mule kick" or jump way high and haul arse.................a couple however just moved a jump or two, quivered, and fell over.

Hunting smaller parcels, I learned a long time ago to break shoulders (keeps 'em on my side of the fence).
