Ruger 10/22 comparisons.
 

I love my 10/22 and its ease of use and reliablitly. I know that the Mini 30 is very similar, but how similar is it to the 10/22? Are there any other options that are similar? Also, without a gas tube return, how does the 10/22 cycle rounds?

The 10/22 operates as a blowback design, meaning that it uses the forces pushing back on teh cartridge case to cycle the bolt. The weight of the bolt and the recoil spring tension hold the bolt in place by inertia until the chamber pressure has dropped to safe levels.

Blowback is used in lower pressure rounds, like .22 rimfire and pistol calibers. Blowback is not really practical in centerfire rifle calibers because bolt weights and spring tensions would have to be so high to keep them safe to fire that they would be big heavy and hard to cycle.

Thank you for the knowledge! SO as the bolt is pushed backwards, the extractor that is on the front of the bolt grabs the spend casiing and voila. You made it very undestandable.
