Is there any truth to what he said?
I became very familiar with the .308 and 30-06 while in the service and I've been reloading both cartridges since the early 70's. Both cartridges are superb performers, but between the two I'd choose the .308 because ballistically it's almost there with the 30-06, it's about half an inch shorter, and there's beaucoup surplus military brass available. If you decide to go with a .308 and decide to reload this fine cartridge using military cases keep in mind that there are differences between military cases (7.62x51) and the standard .308 Winchester cases, you can look up these differences on the web. The Hornady reloading manual contains reloading data for both.

I own a Remington 700P Tactical and a Springfield M1A, both in .308, and a Springfield M1 rifle in 30-06.

Default Hmmmm....

308...you can shoot cheap surplus ammo and have a lot of reloading options. 7mm, too expensive to shoot and reload. 30-06, more power than 308 and can be reloaded with heavier bullets for bigger game. I like the 06 myself and have had a lot of good luck and great accuracy with it.

My Rem 700 is .270. If I was buying another to supplement, not replace, it would be a .270 short mag. Faster bullet, flatter shooting than the -06 and as was said earlier, a great elk round.

Default M700

Don't forget the forgotten round. The 264 win mag. This caliber needs a second look. Need to check out all 26 calibers!

i agree the 264 Win. Mag. is an excellent round, but it's popularity has decreased and i am not sure anyone even chambers a factory rifle in it anymore. plus there is the fact because of this, factory ammo is going to much more limited and expensive. so if a person doesn't reload, then shooting this round will be an expensive undertaking. so when you stray off the beaten path of popular calibers, if a person doesn't reload, then time spent shooting becomes very limited. if a person doesn't reload and will be using only factory loaded ammo, then sticking with the most popular calibers will keep ammo costs down somewhat.

308 then 270 and for overkill, the 300 mag. But if I were a sniper, I would do like the Navy seals. 50 BMG...No explanation given, none needed.

Way to go.

I keep notes when I reload. Instead of marking my 30.06

cartridges, I use one brand of brass for one load, and another brand

for another, etc. Helps me to keep my different loads segregated, at

a glance, in the field.
