Rifle a 22 or 17. As a beginner, he might like to try target shooting to define his skills... for hours of fun.

I think the OP stated his son has shot some of his firearms before plus he is 20 I would think a 22 or a 20 guage is not what he is looking for. Like I said earlier quite a few companies make over under model rifle shotgun combos. They are all around great guns. We carried a savage 24 in 222/20 ga on our combine and i shot tons of stuff from the deck of that combine.

Agreed. Give him your shotgun.

J & S sales has some Remington 870 wingmaster police trade ins for about $350-$400. I'm just recommending it because I'm tempted to order one myself!!!

The reason I'm not giving him one of my guns is because I've already gave away two of my guns to my other older boys. I have an 870 that my dad left me and I'm keeping that one till I die or two old to uae it and the other gun is a Savage that I just bought my self. The rest of my guns are military guns like k98,sks etc. I think I'm going to end up getting him the shotgun. Not sure what kind just yet but it will be a twelve gauge. And I like the idea of getting one with a slug barrel too. If he is going to hint deer out here in the desert he will just have to find a spot that fits the parameters of a slug gun. So in that respect. Which shotgun has the best of both worlds out there that I can get for around $350.00?

I've read some reports that the Weatherby PA-08 sometimes comes with two barrels, one of them being a slug barrel. You can definitely find it in your budget.

For a shotgun I say the 12g mossy combo recommended earlier.

Sabots are expensive but they are accurate. If people kill deer in that area with a 45/70 he can kill deer with a sabot. It's hard to recommend a sabot. If tried to find the right sabot for three identical Mossberg 500's, all three guns could perform best with different sabots. The 12 ga 3/4 oz or 300 grain sabots are adequate to 200 yards.

I vote for the 870 and a slug barrel, also look into Brenneke slug ammo as they have good performance out of smooth barrels( better by far than other slugs from smooth bore )
