Default rifle or shotgun for a first gun

My son is turning twenty in a few days and I am going to get him his first gun. He has shot all my guns and is a pretty good shot. I just can't decide between a rifle or a shotgun. I live in the desert and we have everything from dove to deer out here so I I'm not sure what to get him as his first gun. What would you get a twenty year old as his first gun?

If he's had some experience with the different operations, why not take him to a shop so he can pick one that feels good and fits him? And as always do some research before you finalize the sale. I would normally say 22lr or maybe a used shotgun 12g or 20g(Remington 870 Mossberg 500 or Winchester 1300).

If I were the twenty year old, I would want both! What does he seem to enjoy more?

I agree W/Dan, but I'd ask him what he wanted(within reason). We are hitting the desert this weekend(I live Here Too) to shoot outside. Bought three more Bouncy orange re actives, and I have two spinners as well as plenty of paper targets for the stand... Gotta have an excuse to find cheap 22's and bulk Handgun ammo....and I have some 12 Ga Buck and slugs crying to hit some water targets or a pumpkin or two....

JMHO, get him a pump 12 gauge, either a Rem 870, or Mossberg

500, something with changeable barrels.

Inexpensive, versatile, powerful. No doubt not his last

gun, but a nice start . . .

I'm with the Wolf.
Shotgun ( my preference is the 870), Jackrabbit, Dove, use slugs for javelin and deer, I would say it's a good start to his collection.

My first gun was a shotgun so maybe I'm biased, but I say a shotgun. I good solid pump. Like everyone else recommends, 500 or 870. Mine was a 20ga 500 but I was about twelve or thirteen. For his age I would say 12ga.

you mentioned doves, that pretty much kills getting a rifle. +1 on the shotgun, Mossberg 500 Remington 870 or for a few dollars more, he could have a Benelli Nova, which is an upgrade from the first two for sure

Did you ask him which he would like?

+1 on the pump gun.

With today's rifled barrels, topped with decent optics and a good saboted slug, you can reach out beyond 150 yds. An 18" - 20" barrel makes it a good HD/SD gun and a 26" - 28" barrel makes for a good hunting scattergun!

Hard to beat that versatility!
