Default A rifle for my son

I want to buy my son a bolt action rifle; he is wanting to start deer hunting with me this year. He's ten years old and a whopping 5' 7 and 145 pounds. He's big for his age and a killer on his soccer team. I have hunted all my life and use a Winchester Model 70 in '06. I want to hear your ideas on different rifle models and calibers for a young man. We will be mainly be hunting White Tails and Mule deer. My price range is up to $700 / $800. And yes I did a search for this subject and it came up blank.

cheers
Kelley

ruger 77/44 uses 44magnum effective to 150yds light recoil effective deer medicine.

various 30-30 chamberings will serve well for a youngstger.

A nice 30/30 Winchester or Marlin, even a Henry lever gun would work, as mentioned above!

My recommendation.

I'm not a hunter, myself, but 30/30 is the quintessential deer gun, right?

Does the $800 include the optics?

My thought was a 308 or 270 Win. Obviously the 30-06 has stood the test of time and he is a good sized boy. So probably the 06 would not be to far out of bounds for him with the right bullet. However the 308 and 270 would be what I would think in an excellent range for him to start.

As far as rifles there are many good one!

Gunbroker.com, gunsamerica.com--I have to agree a .308 or .270

would be an excellent choice, if you don't want to break him in on a

30.06...

for the money,,, with optic Savage 110 is the better rifle,,
lever action is ok, but you will not get mule deer range past 200yds with it,

with the good trigger and free float the barrel,, the S 110,,, will out shoot any lever gun.

I think they sell them at Wal mart,, in the $400 range with a 3x9 scope,,

that gives you Ammo $$ so he can learin to shoot it,,
