here's my thinking on this. with going with a custom barrel maker like Krieger or any of the others, you can pick the barrel profile that you want from their list of contours.

now you said you were wanting to build a target rifle, so i would definately go with a heavier profile or contour. with a target rifle and shooting from a bench primarily, weight isn't as big an issue and can actually help you with felt recoil.

pick the caliber and chambering you want, the twist ratio you want, the contour and length and give them a call. expect to pay between $300-400 for the barrel.

3to400 ain't to bad I was thinking it was goin to push 550 to 600 for some reason. Now what twist rate would you think be good for I'm thinking about 130 140 gr bullets?

most of them will list a twist ratio chart that will help you determine the proper twist ratio for the caliber you want to shoot.

yes they do! they also supply barrels to other gun makers as well.

IIRC, they also use to make pellet rifle barrels too.

i am looking forward to seeing your progress on this rifle. maybe it will inspire me to get started back with mine!

i have a Marlin XS7 in 7mm-08 that i want to rebarrel. i want to keep the same caliber and chambering, but get rid of the 22" sporter barrel and go with a SS 26" heavy barrel.
