Recently I posted a thread asking for opinions on three different rifles. After replies and more research, I have narrowed my list down and actually added one.
If you haven't seen my last post I'm looking for an exclusive long range coyote rifle. I won't be shooting much at the range, it will just be used for hunting. I'm looking at two rifles that I can't decide on. The first is a Weatherby Vanguard S2 synthetic in a 25-06. The other is a Savage 110 Predator Hunter in a 6.5-284.
I don't have any experience with Weatherby, but I have owned a savage axis and liked it but it was sold some time ago. Any suggestions, advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
~TJ

I'm loving my new savage 110 it's not exactly what you are looking for but I think that predator model will be right. I don't know much about the Weatherby vanguard but I hear they are fine rifles.

The rifle behind me there is an old savage 12 made in the 80's all stock and only around 300 rounds through it, that thing is awesome!

might want to compare the price of ammo before making a selection. ammo for that 6.5-284 is going to be very expensive to shoot unless you reload. ammo for the 25-06 is much more reasonable and almost half the price of the 6.5-284 ammo.

the Weatherby Vanguard is an excellent rifle and prety much the same rifle as the Howas 1500 with exception to the stock. the Savage is also a fine rifle and a good option as well, with exception to the caliber chosen. reasons are those i listed above.

now if cost of ammo or if you reload, then the 6.5-284 would be a good option as well. has some excellent ballistics for long range shooting. more shooters probably use it for target shooting than hunting, but there are people that do hunt with that caliber.

Savage only because the 6.5-284 is a better long range cartridge then the 25-06. If it were just a battle of rifles I would not place a bet either way in a Weatherby vs Savage showdown.

if a person didn't reload or cost of ammo was an issue, i would recommend the 25-06 over the 6.5-284.

True but 25-06 ammo is not cheap either, if someone does not reaload they should probably stick to 243, 30-30, 270, 308, or 30-06 since you can get ammo for $18.99 from your local Wal-Mart. I reload everything I shoot (except 22LR of course)

i have picked up 25-06 ammo at WalMart and my LGS from $20 to $25 a box. i buy some from time to time mainly for the brass though. around here, 25-06 usually is pretty close to the same as the 243, 30-30 and 30-06. not a huge margin in price difference.

Around here 25-06 ammo goes for around $32 a box, only once did I see it for less. I think the main problem is the big value retailers don't carry it so local gun shops can ask crazy money for it.

might depend on how common that caliber is in your area as to whether the big box retailers will carry it or not. i know my WalMart carries the 25-06 ammo. my LGS runs a bit higher than WalMart on that ammo.

the 25-06 may be more common in my area than yours as well.

That is the funny thing I know more people who shoot 25-06 here then I ever did in Texas, in fact the 25-06 is more popular in my hunting circles then 7mm Rem Mags and 300 Win Mags. Of couse I hunt with alot of old fellas so I guess that makes some sense. 270s are far and away the most popular around here.
