the 280 Rem. was renamed the 7mm Rem. Express for a couple of years in the late 1970's as a marketing strategy to renew interest in the caliber and boost sales. they went back to calling it a 280 Rem. because people were confusing it with the the 7mm Rem. Mag. ballistics wise, the 280 is pretty close in performance with the 7mm Rem. Mag. without the recoil of the magnum. hard to believe, but its ballistics performance is even better than the 270 Win. now this was derived by comparing the same bullet weights, if you go heavier bullets, the 7mm Rem. Mag. does have a little better ballistics performance than the 280 Rem. if wanting to shoot larger sized game at longer distances, go with the 7mm Rem. Mag., but most game that you could use it for at reasonable distances, the 280 Rem. will do just as well without the recoil of the magnum.
