Default Remington 721

I have an old Remington 721 and would like to know the year it was made. I have the S/N but it looks like I also need the proof marks on the side of the barrel too. Is this correct?

Not proof marks- barrel code marks. Look on the barrel, left side, just in front of the receiver. There should be 2 or 3 letters stamped there. You may need a bright light and a magnifier. Then go HERE- learn month and year. Rifle barrels rarely get changed- shotgun barrels DO get changed. Remington Dates of Manufacture

Thanks alot. With your help (and my wife's eyes) it appears that my rifle was built in Dec of 1949. Wow, and it is still a tackdriver. I plan on taking it hunting again this next fall. The scope on it I beleive to be original as well. it is a Weaver ficed 4x with crosshair and post. Not too shabby for $200.00 in a pawnshop.
