How about a .308?

Yes, you can have a .308 barrel put in your action. Its a relatively simple change. You will not be able to put a long action cartridge barrel on it tho. Say, .30-06. You have a short action so you must stay with it. Your action is nowhere big enough for a .338 Lapua tho, sorry.

wrong. an action that accomodates the 308 is still too short for the 223 cartridges. plus the bolt face is a different size.

Did you mean that the other way around, or am I confused?

Re: Can I change .223 to .308 in M700 VLS ?

This caliber conversion is certainly possible, here's what I'm seeing.

1. New barrel.

2. New bolt. I don't think you could just open up the existing bolt face because of the location of the ejector plunger. If this wasn't enough of a factor, you would have to recut the snap ring groove that the extractor fits in. While you're at it, fit a new extractor.

3. The magazine box has to be replaced, along with the follower and spring. I'm not sure, but I think the action area will also have to be inletted to get this to fit.

4. The feed lips on the receiver (magazine well) will have to be reshaped to handle the bigger cartridge.

5. New bolt stop. The bolt will have to move more to the rear of the action for the longer cartridge.

What are the choices of 700 actions? SA Standard, LA Standard, and LA Magnum. Both the .223 and .308 are using the same action. Its not the action that is limiting the bolt travel, its the bolt stop. Change it out, change the bolt, change the barrel. Am I over-looking something?

Why wouldn't you just save up some money and go but the 308??? It sounds like you are overthinking this one. And if you want the Lapua do some reasearch. I wouldnt want to shoot a .338 Lapua in a short action 700 (wouldnt be possible)

That's what I'm thinking. May even be able to do an even swap.

You can rebarrel it to any short action cartridge. You either have to get a new bolt body or open up the bolt face. If you are going to open up the bolt face put a Sako extractor in it. Ejector you can either leave it or take it out completely. Depending on what you want to do.

Also you can shoot long action cartridges in a short action. You just need to put in a single shot follower for the mag $25 or $30 at midwayusa or Brownells. I have a M700SA chambered in 280 AI that is a bench gun. You only get to shoot one at a time so if it is going to be a hunting rifle you will only get one shot.

I wouldn't want to put the 338 in a short action just because it is a big cartridge and while it MIGHT work you take a good chance of breaking something BAD. Meaning gun parts stuck in your face and head.
