Hey folks,
I recently came across the rifle in question, a model 700 VTR, for a price way too good to pass up, divorce deal, bla bla bla...so I can easily get my money out of it if I don't like it. I've always had very good experience with the 700's and never had a problem loading rounds that would group around or under 3/4 - 1/2 at 100, but this one doesnt want to be under 1 inch. I'm loading with various 55grain bullets because I'd like the option to hunt deer (mandatory in Oklahoma) but I'm starting to think it just doesn't like 55g. Using nikon glass, and have tries leuopld with similar results. Something in me isn't sure about the triangle barrel either. Any suggestions or experience with this rifle?

The VTR's don't have the best rep for accuracy. 1" is probably very good for it. How mcuh has it been shot? Clean VERY well with a copper solvent. You may have copper fouling as the .22-250 will foul pretty quickly.

I need to check for copper fouling. Completely slipped my mind. I've fired all but about ten rounds through it. 1" groups aren't good enough for me with either Remington or 22-250. Every rifle I've owned of either was capable of sub 1". That'll be gun show bound if I can't get under an inch.

Seems it was a combination of copper fouling and complete intolerance of 55 grain lead. Loaded several different combinations with 50, 45, and 40 grain and finally got 4 shots just over 1/2" group at 100 yd with hornady v-max 50 grains.

if the 50gr v-max is working better, now try varying your powder weight and see if the group will tighten up. just a suggestion. good luck.
