I cant remember my research exactly, but from what I read I think they are just average. I looked into then, but when the time comes I'm going to get the 700p.

Personal opinion, but the Savages I think are a better rifle.

This. Although I'm pretty biased because my last name is Savage.

I have heard that newer R700's quality / out-of-the box accuracy has dropped alot. I have become a fan of savages as well now that I own my first.

Well I'm looking to sell my R742 3006. I want a bolt action 3006 but my $$ is low. I was looking to get a savage. Would that be a good idea? I was told that Walmart actually wasn't a bad place to buy one. I'm very cautious about buying a rifle from Walmart. Any thoughts?

I just got a remington 700 aac---sd in .308 and I love that gun I've got my groups down to .75 Moa at 100 yards so far with my hands loads and I am still working on them. I also have a savage axis and it is a good gun for the price but I don't like it near as much as my 700, unless you get a accu-trigger the savage trigger is horrible mine breaks at like 7.5 pounds. If this is strictly a hunting riffle I would look more at a savage due to weight differences but if you aren't packing it all over the place and you got the extra money go with the 700.

My experience confirms Centurian's post about Big Green's quality dropping. Last year I had to send a brand new Model Seven back to the factory for head space issues. I then had to contact the factory three times because my brand new 597 1. threw an extractor spring on the third round, 2. had a front sight that was 10 degrees off center so the rifle could not be zeroed, and 3. the scope dovetails on the receiver were also off center so after market sights could not be centered.

I recommend you look at offerings from Savage (everyone here praises their accuracy), TC (I think the recall is cleared up) or Weatherby (I love my $425 Vanguard S2 in.308). You may also want to look at a used Remington from before the Freedom Group bought them). I used to love my 1997 700 ADL in 30-06, and rue the day when I traded it toward the 2011 Model Seven.

Elf, the two-stage factory trigger on my Vanguard S2 has about 1/16 of an inch take-up then breaks like glass at 2.75 lbs.
