Remington 700

Anyone here own, owned or shoot a 700?

What are your opinions on it overall?

Splatter 05-24-2007 07:34 PM

All of the above.

When it comes to aftermarket accessories, the 700 is probably the most popular bolt-action rifle, with virtually everything available for it.

The action design is acceptably smooth and rigid, and easy to make on production machinery.

The Long action is long enough to handle full-sized belted (H&H or Weatherby) length cartridges and is plenty strong for those.
The short action is a trifle too short, IMHO for .308W based cartridges.

The rifle can be a good right out of the box, or can be used as a base to build what you really want, a little bit at a time.

It all depends what you really want.

They are so cheap it seems like there is a bad reason why it's so cheap compared to similiar rifles. Are there any downsides to the 700?

Sure, like anything mass-produced. QC can be a little spotty and bolt handles have been known to pull off.

I have owned 700's in: 6mm REM, .270 WIN, and 7mm REM MAG. Most prolific production rifle in the USA. Very strong and durable action, simple design, and most used action for custom accuracy builds.

Triggers on some are terrible as far as weight goes. I measured a friend's at 7.3 lbs once. caused him to miss a whole deer at 60 yards!:(

I have owned about 20 700's thru the years in many calibers and have found them to be very reliable and accurate rifles. .223, .243, 6mm Rem., 6.5 Swedish, 7x57,
7mm-08, 7mm Mag., 8mm Mag., .300 WM, .375 Mag.,
.264 WM., etc. I wish I had them all back!

I own a Remington 700 in 30-06. It is well made and accurate. Cannot beat a 700 for the money.

I also own a 700 in .30-06. Great gun for the money. Take my advice and put a quality scope on it, don't go cheap in that area.
