My grandfather had a large (50+) firearm collection. He passed away about 25 years ago and the relatives sold off most of it at that time. I just recently found out there were a few left and have been able to acquire them. I had no idea what was there but found some surprises when I got them.

The one relevant to this forum is a Remington breach loading rifle. It is labeled as a .45-70 on a hand written tag affixed to it and in a bit of research this seems to be correct.

It looks to be in decent condition, not great but not bad either. I did not see any rust on it. On the bottom is imprinted "REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. U.S.A. MAY 30 NOV. 15th 1854 APRIL 17th 1866" (or maybe 1886).


Any idea what something like this might be worth?

not enough info and pictures are required. Big difference if it is a rolling block or a Hepburn. And if original or if it has been messed with. On some older guns the sights can be worth as much as the guns themselves. PICTURES.

I'd have to guess the lower end. It doesn't have the rear sight, nor does it have the rod under the barrel. It looks to be in comparable to maybe slightly better condition than the one above. But with the missing parts I believe that will hurt it some.

The one interesting thing is the stamp on the bottom. On the one for sale above it says "Remington Sons Ilion...." on this one it says "Remingtons Ilion..."

I wonder if this is some type of mis-print or other abnormality that might make affect it one way or the other.
