Rem 700 .308 or .30.06

Which is best

For what.
We need details man DETAILS.
Exactly what will this rifle be used for?

trip286 11-12-2012 04:09 AM

Yeah, what he said ^
Ceterus parabus, I would prefer the .30-06. It's not overkill for much of anything the .308 isn't, and is humane for a wider range of game. Accuracy differences are negligible.

30 06 in my mind is overall better. It will do anything the 308 will, accuracy is negligible like was already stated, and I personaly like the ballistics better. The cool thing about the 308 is its military, but that is just politics. Lots of better rounds available, but the military still uses it.

The military uses 7.62x51 nato not 308. They're almost identical cases, but way different operating pressures.

Ballistically, either caliber 30/06-308 is a toss up,but the 06 will beat the 308 on the heavier bullets due to case capacity size.
Recoil is a lot less with the 308.

either one will suit your needs well. there is a small ballistic advantage with the 30-06 over the 308 when heavier bullets are used for larger game. the 308 is just the little brother of the 30-06. both are fine cartridges and it might come down to whether you want a rifle with a short action or a long action.

for me the choice was easy. i own both!

COLDdeadFINGERS 11-12-2012 12:13 PM

Sounds as if the .308 will suit me fine as I already have an M1A 7.62x51. Thanks for all the input. So I'm looking at these models.

Since you have to provide details i will chime in.

As the others said the 30-06 will do everything the 308 does, but it will do it better. More power, better ballistics (depends on ammo, gun, etc)

Do you not like the recoil? Only thing i can think of where the 308 is better. It has a much lighter recoil.

SSGN_Doc 11-12-2012 03:27 PM

I really don't find that much difference in recoil between the two.

If you aren't needing to use the bullets on the heavy end of the spectrum, then the .308 is fine.

If you are looking for a lighter weight rifle for walking around hunting th e.308 and it's short action can save you some weight. The action is also going to be a bit more rigid to aid in accuracy. The smaller case volume allows for more consistent ignition with lighter loads.

If you want to go after heavy or dangerous game and need to use bullets in the 200 and 220 grain range, or want to reach just a bit further, then the '06 is your Huckleberry.

Since you now reveal that you have a .308 semi-auto. Having a bolt rifle with compatible ammo makes sense as well.
