refinishing a mosin

I was bored and noticed my mosin stock was already dinged up :o

So i took a heat gun and stripped the cosmoline from it and went sanding from there

I went up to a 220 grit sandpaper and then used some steel wool to smooth it out

I just stained it and i am waiting for it to dry so i can put a verithane finish on it

And yes i will post pictures :p

What's your guys way of refinishing a milsulp rifle?

I used acetone and steel wool to strip it, stained it with a cheap colonial walnut stain, no further finish. Turned out pretty good I think.

No further finish? :o

What about waterproofing?

None. I even carried it in the rain while hunting recently and the water just rolled off. It may be a multi purpose thing I used, but I don't even know, I just wanted to get rid of the red color and quick.

What color are the stocks suppose to be? Mines getting ragged looking, and it just sits in the case most of the time...

They are a reddish color. I don't know of that color is original or not, but all rearsenaled rifles are redthey get real damn close to lipstick red in some cases.

I didn't want to change my first Mosin I just wanted it to renew it. I stripped it with mineral spirits and steel wool, then steamed all of the dings and dents out. I tried to reproduce the color with a walnut and bloodbay mahogany mix. It looks 90% better and very close to origional. Not the rearsenaled orange. It was never rearsenaled.

Fuzzy cell phone pic, but it conveys the color I went with.

Should i do a linseed oil finish or verethane final finish?

trip286 01-04-2012 05:08 AM

I wouldn't know, but a lot of people swear by linseed oil.
