On what? On Prairie Dogs 500 yards. On large deer keep it under 250 yards. On Elk borrow a friends .338 Mag.

I think you are asking, "What is the maximum effective range"......??? It depends on the animal. I have harvested a lot of bear and caribou with the .243 Win. out to 300 yards. But for moose I would keep it to about 150/175 yards.

I have had hunters harvest caribou at 100 yards and found the bullet had traveled through five feet of meat, from just under the chin to skin near the anal orifice.

With quality bullets the .243 Win. is a fine cartridge. After 34 years of professional hunting, I now use a Winchester Model 70 in .243 for everything but Brown Bear.

What is the maximum range? Or what is the maximum effective hunting range.

On medium sized game 400yds is the absolute max. (Be sure to use the right load)

However, there are many BR shooters that shoot it for 600-800yd competition. It has a better BC than the .308 as a matter of fact.

I know a fellow who has taken everything except "Grizz" with a .220 Swift. That said he would not recommend it as an all around big game cartridge.

Robert- please try this- go to the store and buy some paper plates. The little ones you use to serve kids birthday cake. They should be about 5 inches. Staple those to a holder- they will be your targets.

Whatever range you can hold all your shots on that 5 inch plate - USING THE SHOOTING POSITION YOU WILL USE WHILE HUNTING- is your max range. That plate is the size of a kill zone for a deer.

Do not be surprised to find that your EFFECTIVE range is less than you thought. That is a great rifle and a great cartridge- but practice shooting without a benchrest. Prone, kneeling, standing supported.

Remember- you goal is not to hit the deer (you can do that with a truck) It is to KILL the deer- cleanly and humanely. The RIFLE is likely good to 400 yds for deer. You may find you are good for 200. No shame- and entices you to practice.

Maximum effective range for a 243 on deer class game is between 250-300 yards unless you are using some radically high BC bullet that requires a custom twist barrel. Anything beyond that I would MUCH rather have a 6.5mm they carry much better at range.

I live in NC. Most of the time even when I am walking to my stand I stop by a tree to check out an open area before walking through it. If I am hunting on the ground I sit or stand by a tree. Most of the shots I take on deer I am supporting my rifle on a tree. You can practice on a post or any vertical object. Like c3shooter said practice shots you will take when hunting. You don't have to use your hunting rifle to practice. You can rig any 22 LR with similar optics. You only need 30 to 50 yards to practice. You can shoot tiny targets to make close shots just as challenging as a long shot.
