A RC K98k without an 'X'?
Picked up a nice 1944 byf K98k at the gun show today for $275 , an 'expert' told me it's a Russian capture, but it has no 'X' on the receiver, no electro-penciling and very little evidence of Russian molestation aside from the numbers in the stock.
Some, but not all the numbers match. The only evidence whatsoever is the fact that the number on the stock matches the receiver number.
Is it possible that I just got a very nice RC?
I'll post some pics soon, thanks.

The "Russian capture" models are some of the most fraudulent ones around today. If it lacks the typical characteristics of a Russian capture, are you willing to take some dealer's word for it? Buy the gun, not the story.

What you most likely picked up is a yugo reworked K98. The stocks were stamped w/ the serial #, but no electro pencil or black paint used on the metal.
Sometimes they were scrubbed, sometimes not. Worth more then a Soviet capture. Now we need PICS!!!

Will post them later tonight, it has the capture screws, sight hood and cleaning rod also. He sold it cheap because the bore was filthy and he didnt know how well it would clean up, it cleaned up great.

That is not a soviet, it is a yugo. Unmolested to boot.

byf is a common code, about what you paid. I think the Soviet capture are way overpriced. You'll find yugo's for about $400.00 if the seller knows what he has, still a bit high. I bought my post war Czech 1945 DOU stamped for $300.00. There are good deals if you know what to look for. You got a good deal.
