Which is it? Because while you can chamber them both and fire them both from a .308, the NATO round is slightly different, smaller, IIRC, and has different, lower, reloading and pressure specs.
So, I'm given to understand that while it's do-able, it's not wise to fire a .308 in an M-14, while it's supposedly OK to use 762X51mm in an M1A, even though it's chambered for 308.
Or has the 308 round been so badly confused with the 762 NATO that in reality
the M1A is actually chambered for 762, and marketers are merely lying to increase sales?

The problem with the ammo is with the pressure curve. The M1A/M14 is fine with commercial .308Win under 180 grains.
It is not like the M1 Garand that should be fired with M2 spec ammo.

Lets not forget about the infamous assault pistol. The nice lady on the news says we should be scared, looking at it can cause death, sore throat, kidney stones, and mild skin rash has been reported in some cases.

The 1911 from the start was made by many different firms. They were not all Colt 1911 pistols. Spfld, Remington Office Eqmt. not Remington Arms, Natl Switch & Signal and others who were not even arms companies made the 1911 This does not take into account the many that were made off shore thru contracts with Colt. These ranged from South America to Norway and beyoned. Many of the 1911 pistols today have there brith right in WW11 production plants from the big war. The 1911 is loved by the world, and why not?

So the M1A, in actuality, IS chambered specifically for the 762X51 NATO round?

The throat is what matters. SAI will tell you that any commercially available .308Win under 180gr is fine, even with USGI barrels.
I shoot LOTS of 175 gr and have never noticed any signs of overpressure. And I shoot them through several M14 variants.

I don't see the 556/ 223 or the 762/ 308 as different cartridges. Just different loads thats really the only thing that is different.

Yes, wolf, I have a few.
Some of the receivers are stamped 7.62, and some of the barrels are stamped .308.
The M1A/M14 can handle more variances in pressure that the M1Garand due to it's grooved piston design that allows excess pressure to bleed off.
M1A/M14 rifles are fine with commercial .308Win under 180gr.

I have a few pet peeves. One is people who cant seem to spell bullet. Boolitt is the spelling that irks me for some reason.
The other peeve is the guy who has never hunted and doesnt know anything about guns. He buys a some p.o.s. used gun and is all of tje sudden he's THE authority on hunting rifles and calibers.
