Default Price for a Colt AR 15

I have been looking to purchase an AR 15 and I have a family member that has one he is willing to part with. The family member is my wife's cousin and he got the gun when he was younger and really has not used it much and now that he is in his mid 20s he has no interest in it. He said to give him an offer and I have no idea what to offer him, I do not want to insult him yet I do not want to overpay and feel like he will give me a deal if I give him a fair offer.

The Ar in question is a 223 caliber Colt postban AR 15, I am thinking it is from the mid to late 90s...maybe 96,97, or 98. Due to the ban of that era It does not have the collapsible stock and has a longer barrel from what I understand. I would assume the gun has been fired very little....probably less than 500 rounds, maybe even closer to 250 and kept clean.

Any thoughts on a fair offer or maybe a low offer to start? What is a gun like that worth?

Thanks

John

Sounds like possibly, maybe a Mod 6601 AR? Has maybe heavy barrel, flashhider, no bayo lugs, A2 rear sight with fixed carry handle?

Check auction sites for SOLD guns/guns with bids to get an idea of value. My son bought a barely used one, one mag, in a FTF sale a year ago for $800.00.
He was trained onthe 20" A2 rifle and loved it.

It does not have the bayonet lugs and does have the fixed handle from what I remember.

Anything you pay for that rifle is better than anything you would pay anywhere else, if you can even find one.

+1 any price online in the last month or so is grossly over the true value. A Colt post ban in good shape is worth at least $800 in pre hysteria dollars. Current price would probably be double that.

Sounds EXACTLY like what my son bought. Sweet rifle, and bayo lugs are overated. I can count on my nipples the number of times I put a bayo on my ARs or AKs or any of my other rifles for that matter.

If you can snag that pony for $800.00 - $1K, you did fine. For $800.00 you did GREAT - that was the lower end of the price range when my son snagged his almost 1 year ago.

Now anything over a $K... hmm. You roll the dice that the "ban" will hit and ALL ARs will go up, so you buy it at a $K - or - the ban blows over and normality returns. In which case, a $K is a bit high for that rifle, as most folks just have to have M4geries any more so the prices on the rifles weren't as "heated".

One that sounds very similar at my LGS for $2200, I'd jump on it at $800-$1000
