Default Possible rust on savage 11 .308

This gun is less than a year old and has been stored in dry conditions. I was wondering if the brown stuff in the pic is rust or some type of adhesive from when the barrel was out into the receiver at the factory. What do you think?

Mmm, I don't see any brown anything. Could you draw an arrow pointing to it?

Oh yeah. I'd say it's rust, too. It looks like that's a SS rifle. Last year, when I had a rust problem with my guns, the first one it showed up on was my SS Savage. Even before the blued ones. I also thought I had stored them in a dry place, and had a desiccant pack in there, but the problem only went away when I moved the whole cabinet.

I prefer a old tooth brush for spots like that. Q-tips always seem to shred apart for me and leave little clumps

I got here a little late, but, FYI to all, a suede brush from your cobbler, usually made out of bronze or copper and Hoppe's #9 (still the best solvent) will clean all rust. Also, if you are very concerned about copper fouling, put the gun in a vise, business side down, cork the tip and fill with Parsons undiluted ammonia. Wait about ten minutes and uncork. The sluice will be green -all the copper- and your barrel will be spotless without the need to brush the lands and grooves raw.
