Trapper1, I am not sure what this post is saying. Could you please review it and clarify the statement, as I'm unwilling to comment on the content unless I understand the question.

Just please dont buy a Remington 770. I'd suggest used savage 22lr bolt for first rifle like everyone else. Then of course the mosin is a fun gun cheaper to shoot than most if ur willing to take care of it that extra bit after corrosive primers.

Tony, a Marlin X-7 or Stevens 200 are both fine budget rifles and are as accurate as you'll ever need. Both can be had for a around $300. If you don't know someone who is an experienced reloader, buy a few different brands/weights of factory ammo, your new rifle is likely to shoot much better with one than the others. stick with that load, and shoot up the others for practice. I am more familiar with the Stevens200, it is the same barrel and action as the Savage and comes with a nice grey synthetic stock. It comes in the calibers you listed, also 7mm mag. The .308 has a bit less recoil than the .270 or 30/06, mainly because it uses about 10 grains less powder than the longer cases but can produce decent velocity with the 130 -165 grain bullets that most people use in all these calibers. It uses a short action, so a shorter bolt throw and a slightly lighter, more compact rifle. Also nothing more accurate than a good .308, it has been THE choice of military and police snipers for a good 50 years and a very popular target round as well. A 3-9x scope like the Sightron S1 or Vortex Crossfire will set you back around $130-$140 more. I wouldn't go cheaper than that, you can get a scope for $50 but will be replacing it before very long. Sample of .308 accuracy ( the flyers were the shooters fault!) :

Tony,

A good example is yesterday I went to an Estate Auction in the small town that I live close to. I won the bid on a like new Tikka T-3 Stainless Barrel Camo Stock Rifle in 270 Winchester caliber for $450.00. The bolt face shows no wear or marks at all. It retails for right at $800. A lot of people buy rifles as well as pistols on a whim and never or hardly ever shoot them. This rifle is a perfect example! So there are deals out there if you are patient and shop around.

I also payed a little extra for my M-N as I was an C/R FFL at the time ( I've let it expire as it's cheaper that way, less temptation) and the guy I bought it from did the degrease and cleaning before he shipped it along with some other equipment.

Hi there for your first rifle get a 22 cal. never mind the long distance shooting just yet . it takes a lot of knowledge to shoot a thousand yards or more . and if i tried to factor all that is involved with long distance shooting you would likely not buy a rifle . you have to crawl before you can walk . besides what is the sense in buying a rifle that will shoot that distance and you can not . stick with a 22 cal and the Ammo. is cheap .best of luck and get to your range you will get a lot of tips . trapper1

There is a lot of mathmatical and enviromental variables that need to be calculated to shoot long distance if you don't own a 22 yet start with that it may not sound as fun but atleast you won't be waisting money on expensive ammo and not hit anything past 250 yards if you really want a cheap long range shooter check out savage rifles or marlin
