I have settled on the configuration for my Poor mans assault rifle. A Remington 7400 Semi-auto carbine. Caliber .30-06. 18" barrel. Choate stock. Eagle 10 round magazines. BSA red dot sight. 1 1/2 groups at 100 yards. Eats any -06 ammo I feed it from 125 gr spire points to 200 gr. round nose. Did a trigger job this weekend. The trigger is basically the same set up as an 870 or 1100 so it is not the best for precision rifle work. Smoothed out nicely with stones and crocus cloth on a knife edge (sear engagement is not square, but hooked. The only real issue I have with it is you must pull the barrel to remove the bolt carrier group. I found a company in Colorado (remington7400.com) that specializes in these rifles. Next step is to have then thread the barrel and install an M-16 type flash hider (muzzle blast from that 18" bbl is pretty significant).

That's a pretty nice set up Robo - What did the package set you back, if you wouldn't mind sharing for the class?

.30-06 will flat stop just about anything dead in it's tracks, so no worries there. 1.5 MOA out of a semi auto like that is highly respectable. Minute of Bad Guy all day long with groups like that.

Nice idea going in a different direction.

I got it off gunbroker about 1 1/2 years ago. Came like pictured except it had a 3-9 scope with see thru rings sitting on the base. I just never warmed up to the scope as the rings put it too high for a decent cheek weld.

Price? $500 + $30 for the red dot - the price of the scope/rings that I could sell. I think I did pretty good.

I did not have a .30-06 and could not justify the $700-1200 for a decent Garand.

That's a nice little piece of work for $500 (give or take ). Definitely would keep some heads down in a SHTF scenario without ANY problems.

I am of the opinion that one should have, in the arms room, one of each decent caliber and two each of the good/popular calibers (.223, .308, 7.62 X 39, .22 LR, 9mm, .45ACP). Heads down...they had better get down behind some significant cover.

One quibble:

It is not an assault rifle. Primarily, it doesn't go full auto. Secondarily, the cartridge (.30-06) is not an intermediate cartridge. It is a full-power cartridge. What you have there is typically called a battle rifle.

But I like it....seems a bit more modern....I'd like a garand too but I just don't want to spend that much on that one....I'm fine with my SKS.
