Default Pig shooting gun

Hey guys I'm relatively new to the sport not a complete novice but always keen for advise now I have a Remington mod 700 .243 with a leupold scope and I went shooting the other week and we came across some goats and pigs now at a distance I love the .243 but we also came across some pigs and goats at close range 20 to 50 meters even closer once and the scoped rifle was no good ( especially when I got charged) so now I'm thinking of a open sights rifle maybe lever action I'm not sure if any one could recommend something it would be helpful thanks guys

Savage makes a rifle specifically for that.

Never hunted hogs or goats, nor have I ever been charged, but would imagine a 30-30 lever gun would do just fine. I also think a 12 guage with 00 buck or a rifle slug would put the hurt on em.

I like my 45-70. It works well from 5 feet to 150 yards. Takes a 500 pound hog with no problem.

Lever action 30-30, 35 Rem, 444 or 45-70 etc with open sights. Possibly a receiver sight (peep). Red dot would work too. If you have Weaver bases on your rifle, remove the scope and put on a red dot like a Bushnell TRS 25 or Vortex Sparc. Quick release rings on your scope will make the transition easier.

This is what I use, works well at short and long range. I use a mix of 50gr tipped varmint, 55gr soft points, and 50gr jacketed hollow points for pigs.
Shooting the .223 of course.

scott What scope are you useing on your rifle?? 1 to 4 or 6 or 2-8 would be helpfull for short shots. You could also use a handgun for closer shots. 357mag with 170gr sp or 180gr hc to a glock 20 loaded full of 180 to 200gr will do nicely. All you need is a heavy for diameter bonded or copper bullet in that 243 to work very well. Use better stalking skills and you will cut down on spooking the pigs. I have killed many a hog with a 357 revolver and enought close up with a 2.5-10 scope to not feel uneasy with ether. 20 feet close close enought with a scope and running by with a revolver.

In Australia knocking pigs over at close range(50yds or less) people here and myself included have used 12g shotguns loaded with SSG's,Buckshot,SG/00 Buckshot and this is in close cover with great results.
With rifles generally lever actions from 30/30 upto 45/70.
The .243 loaded with either 87gn or 100gn projectiles will do the job on goats and pigs no worries but if your going into an area with dense scrub I'd have either a lever action with a small powered 'scope on it or a shotgun loaded up for bear.
