options other than .243
Hello, I have a 6mm browning safari bbl short chambered for .243,I am not a fan of the .243 and would like to make something else.Would realy like to try the 6 PPC or 6BR but am concerned as my bbl is1-10 twist while the others use a 1-14 twist.Any suggestions regarding this quandry or other 6mm calibers that you have tried and liked.

I don't like it for a hunting caliber, already have a 30-06, have a 250 for varmits and various 22's and 17's for plinking and gopher shooting .Would like something just to punch paper that is accurate and just think that the .243 is not it.Want something a little different than the norm.

IMO, the 243 is a very accurate and stable round. happens to be one of my favorites of all time. with muzzle velocity ranging from 2700-3400 fps and drop of 33-40" at 500yrds with a 200yrd zero, this an excellent target round. more than likely you would possibly be looking at a barrel change to go to the round you mentioned. what case is the one you are considering based on? the 243 is based from the 308, so that means the action is a short action possibly and the bolt face is the same as a 308, 30-06, 270 ect. ect. (.473 bolt face diameter) not as familiar with the browning rifles, maybe someone else will offer some input and advice.

Cool. I know lots of guys who shoot bench rest at 500-600 yards with .243. And I find it to be a very versatile hunting round.
Good luck finding what you're looking for. Let us know what you wind up with!

Check out accurateshooter.com there is a link to good articles on .243 and 6mmbr you should read these as it may help with your decision and give you a couple of ideas. As axxe said above you are probably looking at a barrel change.

Properly loaded in a good rifle the .243 is amazingly accurate. I loaded for one I had a long time ago and it could punch 5 shot 1 hole groups if I did my part. I mean 1 hole. It looked like a single .257 bullet. Winchester 670 carbine with a 19" heavy barrel. It would shoot under 1" with 100 gr factory ammo.

dom, if a barrel change is warranted, it won't be cheap. accurate, quality barrels are expensive. it will also require the services of a gunsmith to install. if all you are doing is looking for a target shooting rifle, do you reload? if not, this will open up all kinds of hidden accuracy in your rifle. another suggestion, do what i did, start from the ground up and build a rifle. i bought a brand new bare Remington M700 receiver and having it barreled and chambered in 6.5mm-06. 26" heavy, fluted and muzzle braked barrel. this will pretty much be a strickly for target shooting rifle. sometimes it's more expensive and labor intensive to modify a rifle into something else. i know a lot of people do, and i have myself in the past. just some suggestions to think over. one other thought, if you decide to rebarrel, use a quality barrel, or you will never be happy with the rifle.
