For those game? Don't sell yourself short and look into the Savage .17 HMR with the Accu-trigger or look into something chambered in .204 Ruger.
I agree that shooting a high caliber rifle (even rimfire) into the air at a tree squirrel is not responsible shooting practice unless you have a bunch of private land. Ground squirrels are different, and anything that can reach out and touch them is fine. As said above, know your background before shooting in any direction at anything.
Also, don't let friends make you "man up" for something you won't enjoy shooting all day.
