What are your opinions of a Marlin lever action 30-30 model 336c? My friend asked me to ask around prior to buying this gun. He loves the way it feels and all. He doesn't need a gun that goes 400 yards or anything, more of a 100 to 150 yard shooter.

Please let me know if you know any pros and cons for this gun. thanks

The Marlin 336c is an excellent deer rifle out to 150 yards. You can't go wrong with it.

Pro's It is a Marlin a much better lever gun than anything winchester ever produced. Con it is a 30-30 not the most powerful cartridge out there.

That being said if he likes it they are a great gun and will out last him and his children. I say get it. I also agree with mwsfarm in that everyone should own a 30-30.....

The Marlins are very good lever action rifles. In many ways superior to the Winchester 94.
My personal bias that probably will not matter to 99% of the shooting public is the micro groove barrel does not work well with my preferred plinking bullet, 150 gr cast gas check. I have a Marlin 1895G 45-70 w/o the microgrove barrel and love it.

I have one, its a good gun, but I dont hunt with it. the safety is broken so I leave it at home. I have another Marlin bolt .22 thats going on 20 years old. still a great gun. i like Marlin guns.

i had one & gave it to my father-n-law for a car along with 1000rds or so most reloads...the marlin i had loved the 150gr cast loads w/gas checks but loved the 170grs better...i have a question...what does micro groove barrel mean

I certainly like mine. I'm partial to any Marlin lever action and also own a .45-70 and .308ME in addition to the .30-30.

I own a 336c in .30 WCF and like the rifle very much. Don't hunt with it as Illinois is a shotgun only state. Great to shoot at the range, though. Nice overall dimensions and accurate at 100 yards. Given my old eyes that's a pretty good range. The ammo is readily avalable and inexpensive relatively speaking.

As said by others, .30 - 30 is not an extremely powerful cartridge. That said, I still like the rifle and the the nostalgia of a lever action. Another good thing, it doesn't beat either your shoulder or your wallet too badly during the time at the range.
