Default Which one

I want a good varmint rifle but don't know if I should go with a .223 or a .22 mag. Any suggestions?

Welcome to FTF. Of the 2 I would go .223. I assume the following replies will question your selection of calibers and offer better suggestions.

I would have to agree. Your have alot more options and are more versatile with the 223. Longer range. More knock down. More choices of ammo to. Just my 2 cents man

I love to shoot both calibers, and have several rifles/pistols in each.
But the 223 will serve you better for a bigger variety of uses.

OR a Mossberg MVP. Chamberd in 5.56 can shoot .223 and uses an AR mag. Better price and accurate.

223/5.56 which all good ARs are chambered in is my suggestion. If you are coyote, fox or similar sized game hunting only the 223/5.56. Not bad for Hogs either.

What range are you going to be shooting ? If 150 yds & under, the 22 Mag is cheaper with less noise so you can continue to shoot.

The undisputed King of Varmiters is the 22-250 which will really extend your reach. But there is nothing wrong w 223 as long as you get a 1:7 twist to stabilize the heavier 77 gr & up.

Mea Culpa, 1:7 is assuming you want the maximize range of 223 or are into long range shooting. On FTF it is best to never "assume" anything. Savage offers a tgt model w this twist. Most varmit rds for 223 are 55 gr or less and 1:12 Twist is optimum. There are compromises in the 1:8 or 1:9 range.

The round rarely mentioned is the .243 and it can double as a Deer rifle.
