The A2 is a good weapon, I carried it and I liked it. The NATO Ball FMJ round is more powerful than many non-military shooters who've never owned one think. But most basic ground troops can't shoot it accurately at long ranges, consistently. I liked the M14 better, (XM21 especially) though for combat situations I'd rather have it w/o the wood stock. It's being used currently in Afganistan too, with great results.
Our military is currently using numerous different rifle platforms and types, from the .50 on down, and it's working well for them. Flexibilty is key to modern warfare. We've finally learned we must adapt to the situation.
