I'm was in the same boat. This will be my first year hunting, and after a lot of research and many trips to the local gun shop I picked up a savage 111 trophy hunter xp chambered in 30-06. It's a package so it comes with a scope, typically I don't like the package deals but it actually came with a Nikon 3-9x40 scope and I couldn't be more pleased with everything about it. I walked out of there with a rifle that was ready to hunt with for just about $600 dollars. The Ruger American is a good rifle to look at as well.

I cant say enough about our Savage 116 in stainless steel. It's easy to shoot well, fits my 6 foot frame a LOT better than some other guns we have. It prints just over 1" at 100 yards with cheap ammo and doesn't string when the barrel gets hot. It's a good .30-06 - nothing more, nothing less.

I would look at the Ruger American or the Savage Axis if you want a price point rifle. I have shot the 770. It is accurate and works smooth but a lot of people have had issues with the 770.

I have an Axis and would definitely recommend it. For $300 you get one hell of a rifle. Its pretty ****ing accurate. Mines in .270 and I'm getting 1.5 in groups at 200 yds with Winchester Super X Soft Point. I am sure using something like Nosler you could easily get it down to 1 in or smaller.

You might check out the Mossberg 100 ATR 30-06,I bought 1 last spring and it's a great shooting gun.

For around $500 you can get a Weatherby Vanguard. The Vanguard is guaranteed to shoot sub 1" groups at 100 yards. It is a much nicer rifle and if you sell it you can get your money back out of it. It's hard to recover your money on guns you can buy at Walmart.

T/C Venture. I was just about to buy a Ruger American 30-06 until I saw the Venture. For another $100 the venture is a much better rifle.
