Default New white tail deer rifle?

I'm in the market for a new deer rifle. Right now I shoot a 7mm bolt action, have been looking at a cva Hunter 45/70 or 35 whelen. Which is a better deer cartridge?

how much experience do you have with either cartridge? both can be somewhat expensive to shoot unless you reload.

if you aren't reloader, i would keep in mind the price of factory ammo when making that decision. both are excellent cartridges though.

depends on a lot of things. That 45/70 is going to behave totally different than the .35 Whelan (which is very similar to a 30-06 ballistics, ie: long range hits hard). You mentioned you own a 7mm, what kind? (7mm rem mag, etc)

That 45/70 is great if you are taking shots 150 yards or less. It starts dropping like a meteor when it loses a little steam. I see it as a beefed up 30-30

1209,
I certainly would reconsider the two cartridges you mentioned. Expensive to start with and the 45-70 is not for most new shooters and hunters. Has some recoil compared to other good deer calibers like the 270, 308, 30-06, 7MM Rem Mag., and common traditional rounds that are readily available and at a fairly reasonable price. Only my thoughts.

Yeah well I've also been considering a 300win mag. I shoot long shots mostly power lines.

7mm, 300wmr, 45-70? An awful lot of gun for white tail. I've got a 45-70. A beefed-up 30-30? My loading charts say it can be loaded for elephant. Try that with your 30-30. MHO? Short range, 44mag. Long range, 270 or 308 are more than enough.

Sorry my phone isn't sending me notifications when someone comments. I shoot a Smith & Wesson model 1500 7mm win mag. I have no experience with either 45/70 or 35 whelen but I'm a odd caliber guy I carry a Glock 20c which is chambered 10mm auto if you didn't already know that. It's fairly expensive to shoot also. I also own .243, 30-06, 30-30, the 7mm win mag, and an Egyptian Hakeem 8mm. Which I don't hunt with it usually. I'm a big gun kind of guy, but here in Alabama not many big game animals to hunt.
