well everyone i made it to korea safe and have started my 1 year F*** F*** game... the day before i left i went to the gunshow in el paso and picked up a ruger no.3 chambered in 30-40 krag i would post pics but cant due to the fact im 7,000 miles away. anyone have experience with the no.3 and the ballistics of the 30-40? any info would interest.

I had a #3 in 45-70. It is the same action as the #1 but with much different furniture. Check the loading books and on line loading data. Some have special loads specifically for the Ruger #1 &#3. Max loads for the 45-70 were only 200 fps slower than the 458 Win Mag in the Rugers. The 30-40 is similar to the 300 Savage in power on standard loads. Factory loads are light because of the Krags weak lock up. The Krags have to be held under 40kpsi but the Rugers will handle much higher pressures.

You will want to load for it and there are some site that offer single shot info. You never know till you fire some rounds how those single shot ruger will do but there are tuneing tricks for them too. Make a nice deer hog or elk rifle stay with in its limits. Might ask at a ruger forum for loading info for some quality hunting loads and some cast plinking loads.
