My wife knowing how much I love guns bought me a Weatherby Vanguard chambered in 257 Weatherby Mag. from a friend of ours for our anniversary. I have been trying to find out as much as I can about this caliber since it's not one that I am real familiar with. I like the gun and what I have found out so far has been good (and what was I gonna do tell her I don't want it??). Anyhow, I'm just looking for any insights some of ya'll might have, I need to get a scope for it so any advice on that will help also. I'm used to the more traditional calibers 06, 270, 7 mag, 30-30, so any advice will be appreciated

IMO the .257 Weatherby Mag is one of the best calibers available. It stands out for long range and will take most any game. Ammo is expensive!

I have built a few rifles in 257 Weatherby Magnum, and other than the very high price for the brass and relatively short barrel life, I would say it is the best of the quarter bore cartridges due to the velocity.

I have test shot all that I have built with ammunition from Conley Precision Cartridge Co. and that ammunition was loaded with the 115 grn Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet @ an advertised 3,375 fps muzzle velocity. I have always built them at 27" finish length minimum to achieve the potential velocity and we were getting velocities in excess of 3,400 fps. All in all a good high performance cartridge that has excellent long range abilities, and one of the few Weatherby cartridges that I really like.

No problem on the input. Good high performance quarter bore cartridge, no doubt.

The ABS manufactured carbon fiber composite barrels are exceptional. Mike Degerness is lightyears ahead of everyone else when it comes to carbon fiber composite barrel technology.
