New Mosin Nagant

Went to Big 5 today picked out a Mosin for my birthday. Just as I was about to grab a round receiver Izhevsk when I inquired as to if the had any other Mosins in stock, he told me he had 6 in the back all matching serial numbers plus a hex receiver if I was "into that kind of thing". Since I already have a round Izhevsk I decided to go with the Hex Tula. I'm a bit enthused because the all the serial numbers match and they all say 71, it's a 1933. However I don't believe the stock is original as you can see for some pics it doesn't look like the receiver and stock match up properly?

here are some picks

Nice Mosin. When you are talking about 80 year old rifles, ANYTHING can and did happen. Many were stripped down, refinished and disparate parts reassembled. Just having matching receiver and bolt is gravy!
But that works in our advantage too - keeps the cost down so more of us can enjoy them. :)

Your Tula should have a prewar stock with sling slots surrounded by metal plates that have two screws holding them in and a Tula star with the date of 1933 under it on the right side of the butt if the stock is original. Most, are refurbished stocks or post war stocks. A box with a diagonal in it means the wood has been refurbished and found on the right side of the butt. Take it out of the stock and check the receiver date. It will be on the tang. Many have had new or refurbished barrels installed on other receivers. If yours is original to the barrel it should have a star and the date 1933 stamped on the bottom side of the rear tang. You have a really nice rifle for sure. The one I have with the serial number of 65 is a Tula x-sniper dated 1943.

Yep, that tang date can tell some tales. My Finn M39 is barrel-dated 1942, but the tang date is 1895! My oldest gun by far......
