The 308 Win. would be a good trainer caliber. The barrel life is long in this caliber and should allow you 1000's of rounds through it before it goes south. Barrel should last about 6500 rounds. I started with a 300 Win. Mag. and the barrel lasts about 1100 rounds before it needs replaced. I'm having a 260 Rem. built now on a Surgeons 591 action to carry on in this 1000 yard endevour. The 260 Rem. has very similar exterior ballistic characteristcs to the 300 Win. Mag. You could start with the 308 Win. and rebarrel to 260 Rem. once you get up to speed.

Really? 1000 rounds? That's awful low.

on target rifles, barrels are considered a wear item. many target shooters fire more rounds a year than the average hunter does in several lifetimes. this is the reason, many hunting rifles are good choices as used rifles when looking to buy. also a good source for building a custom rifle.

O.K. if your not reloading you can get target 300 WM ammunition from Black Hills and Federal. They both have the 190 Grain BTHP SMK and work well with 1 in 11 twist barrels. You should be able to go up to the Berger 210 grain bullet with 1 in 11 twist if you reload. I use the Berger #30419 bullet with Nosler brass. You'll need a good timed muzzel brake and consider a 1" thick decel pad on the butt stock. These two items should tame the recoil out pretty good for target shooting.

Well, I don't know about any shooting over 600 yds, since that is longest distance at range I shoot. But my Ruger 77 tang safety rifle that I had rebarreled with a heavy varmit barrel chambered in 7x57 mauser does pretty good up to 600yds. Recoil of this cartridge is on the mild side. I've no problems with shooting it from bench, no matter the number of rounds I've fired with it.

Buy 100 rounds of quality ammo and the spend the rest on reloading equipment and supplies with pops half of the money. You will want a different bullet for long range than factory ammo gives you and use the first hundred rounds of factory ammo for brake in getting to know your rifle and scope and starting a notebook to work from.

i believe you will be happy with the 7mm! very good round. Hardluk has some sound advice. if you don't reload, give it some consideration. will allow you to custom tailor your ammo to the rifle and give you another edge in accuracy over factory ammo.

i have three different chamberings of 7mm, a 7mm-08, a 280 Rem., and a 7mm Rem. Mag. and over the past few years have come to the conclusion, that 7mm are a fine caliber for just about any type of shooting. now i need to find or build a rifle in 7x57!

30/06 - Best choice of bullets, cheap brass, long barrel life, better ballistics than the 308. Con= recoil and lack of rifle choices.
Next comes 260- Savage predator ready to go entry level quality in LH too.
