Default New hunter. what .308

Just started learning to hunt deer from some older guys teaching me muzzle loaders. They've given me a nice muzzle loader but now I want to buy a good .308 for rifle season. Probably just a good bolt gun, not too expensive but something that shoots straight and has a good reliability record. Advice?

How much do you want to spend on this rifle? There are a lot of decent rifles on the market with prices ranging from $350 and up. For $350 you have to add the cost of a scope. There are some nice savage combos with a decent scope for under $500.

best advice. start hitting the gun stores and the pawn shops. set a budget of what you want to spend on rifle and scope. don't limit yourself on caliber. there are plenty of other fine calibers that make excellent deer getters.

don't discount buying used either. i have picked up some really good deals on used rifles, and some with scopes already attached.

there are plenty of decent, dependable and reliable rifles available, new and used.
