New deer rifle

I am in the market for a new bolt action deer rifle. I'm thinking about a Browning X-Bolt in a .270, but I'm keeping an open mind. I have a Model 7 in a 7mm.08. It's a great gun. I just want another rifle. Any suggestions.

Your thinking right w/ a long action as you have a short action. .270 is not one of my favorite cartridges, but it works. Why not look at a 7mmRem Mag. that way if you reload you can economize on bullets.

You will definitely enjoy shooting an X Bolt. Mine is a .308 X Bolt Hunter with a wood stock.

.270 is the best deer gun I've used in 25 years of white-tail and muley hunting. imho you can't go wrong with it.

Having said that, Browning makes a fine rifle. My dad used an A-bolt Medallion for several years. Now he and I both use Winchester model 70's with synthetic stocks. It's ridiculously polite on the recoil and the accuracy of this rifle is quite frankly unbelievable for the money. The dealer that my dad buys all his guns through told him that one of his other long-time customers bought 2 new model 70's just for the barrels.

One more vote for the value of the Winchester model 70. I love mine in .243 winchester... Very accurate and I don't worry about whether or not it will get the job done...

jp has a good point here, as i have a Marlin XS7 in 7mm-08 and a Remington M700 in 7mm Rem. Mag. i use some of the same bullets in both rifle loads. the 7mm Rem. Mag. can be very accurate and with the right powder very pleasant to shoot.

You should look at the new Weatherby Vanguard Series 2. They are really nice and have a two stage trigger that breaks like glass. They also come with a sub MOA factory guarantee. You can get them with detachable mags for 270 and 30-06. I saw the basic model for sale at Cabelas for $440.

tully if you're open to suggestions, then check out the Marlin X7 series and the Savage Axis series of rifles. very affordable, very accurate and pleasant to shoot. i am more partial to the Marlin's, have three of them and really enjoy shooting them.

Or get an X Bolt in .280 Rem (formerly known as 7mm Express) and use the same bullet as the 7mm-08.

Nothing says you cannot possess all three, 7mm-08, .280 & 7mm R. Mag. :D
That is the option I support!
